Biography

Proving any obstacle can be overcome with a little bit of innovation, Nitro Circus star Aaron ‘Wheelz’ Fotheringham has laughed in the face of Spina Bifida and has gone on to create a sport that has empowered millions of people throughout the world!
Aaron has been on a wheelchair since age 7, the 21-year-old has pioneered a series of world-first tricks adapted from skateboarding and BMX, dubbed WCMX. Wheelz started riding skateparks at the age of 8, when his older brother encouraged him to drop into a quarter pipe. From that point on, he was hooked. Over the years, he has honed his skills at skateparks across the U.S. and challenged himself to try progressively more difficult tricks: carving, grinding, power-sliding, hand-planting, and spinning are just a few of his accomplishments. In July 2006, Wheelz landed the world’s first wheelchair backflip. Just four years later, he stunned crowds at a camp in Woodward by landing the first double backflip — an incredible feat for the then 18-year-old. In 2010, Wheelz was invited to join Nitro Circus and instantly became a crowd favorite. In 2011, during Nitro’s first tour of New Zealand, Wheelz landed the world’s first wheelchair frontflip in front of 17,500 screaming fans in Wellington. To date, Wheelz is the only person in the world to hit Nitro’s famous Giganta Ramp in a wheelchair!
Aaron is the Captain of Team Box and Mike has been hand building all of Aaron’s chairs exclusively since the beginning… together, through determination and pure force of will, they continue to redefine what is possible for wheelchair users!
“WCMX has been a great outlet in my life, it brings alot of joy to me and I feel like WCMX is a great way for kids and adults to see their wheelchair as more of a gift!”
