Scott “Scotty” Pope
Age: 57 years old
Biography
An endurance athlete, former musician, and passionate advocate for adaptive sports. A lifelong Bay Area resident, Scotty was a drummer in underground punk and hardcore bands until a spinal cord injury in 2004 changed his path. Seeking new challenges, he played wheelchair rugby with the NorCal Quakes before shifting to long-distance racing due to chronic pain and GI issues.
Scotty has completed multiple half marathons, including the Golden Gate, San Francisco, Berkeley, and Spring Equinox half marathons, with his sights set on the New York City Marathon. His journey has been shaped by a deep friendship with Mike Box, a pioneering wheelchair designer who collaborated with Scotty to develop ultra-light cross-trainer wheelchairs. These chairs, inspired by WCMX skate park designs and beach bombers, allow Scotty to compete on diverse terrains while maintaining comfort and performance.
Awaiting a grant from the Challenged Athletes Foundation, Scotty is set to receive a custom-built chair designed for everyday use but engineered with the lightweight tubing of a track chair. He’s also looking forward to collaborating with Shawn, founder of the Live to Roll Foundation, to share his experience with adaptive sports and technology.
For Scotty, pushing in races mirrors the adrenaline rush he once felt behind the drum kit. At 57, he remains committed to endurance sports, embracing every challenge with resilience and determination.
